The Drone War: How Unmanned Aircraft Changed the Conflict
A soldier on Ukraine's front can sometimes hear a drone before seeing it, and often sees nothing at all. The small aircraft may be observing for artillery, carrying an explosive, relaying another drone's signal, or waiting above a road for movement.
Drones existed in the Donbas war before 2022, but the full-scale invasion transformed their number, variety, and role. By 2024, unmanned systems shaped activity from a trench a few kilometres away to an oil refinery deep inside Russia.
Eyes Above the Front
Commercial quadcopters gave small units an aerial view once available only to larger militaries. A team could inspect the next tree line, correct mortar fire, watch a supply road, or confirm damage with a machine costing far less than a conventional reconnaissance aircraft.
That visibility compressed the time between finding and striking a target. Vehicles, artillery, command posts, and groups of soldiers could be observed and attacked within minutes.
It also made concealment and movement harder. Camouflage, bad weather, smoke, darkness, decoys, and rapid dispersal became essential on a front where a hovering camera might be nearly everywhere.
FPV Attack Drones
First-person-view drones put a live camera feed in front of an operator who steered the aircraft into a target. Built from commercial components and fitted with warheads, they could attack trenches, vehicles, antennas, buildings, or individual soldiers with unusual precision.
Their low cost changed military arithmetic without making expensive weapons obsolete. A drone worth hundreds or thousands of dollars could disable a tank, but it still depended on an operator, radio link, suitable weather, a functioning warhead, and a supply chain producing enormous numbers.
Both armies created specialised units and integrated drones with artillery and infantry. Ukraine established a separate Unmanned Systems Forces branch in 2024, reflecting how quickly an improvised capability had become institutional.
Far Beyond the Trenches
Russia used Iranian-designed Shahed-type one-way attack drones, later produced in Russia as Geran systems, against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Their relatively low cost allowed large waves mixed with cruise and ballistic missiles to exhaust air defences and complicate targeting.
Ukraine developed long-range drones that struck airfields, factories, fuel depots, and refineries hundreds of kilometres inside Russia. These aircraft carried smaller warheads than many missiles but extended Ukraine's reach without relying entirely on scarce Western weapons.
At sea, uncrewed surface boats packed with explosives damaged Russian ships and threatened bases in occupied Crimea. Combined with missiles, they pushed much of the Black Sea Fleet away from Sevastopol and helped Ukraine reopen a commercial shipping route.
The Electronic Contest
Electronic warfare tried to break the link between drone and operator or corrupt satellite navigation. Jammers, spoofing, frequency changes, directional antennas, relay aircraft, and software updates created an endless cycle of measure and countermeasure.
By late 2024, fibre-optic FPV drones began using a physical cable instead of a radio link, making conventional jamming ineffective. Other systems added machine vision or autonomy to continue toward a target when communications failed.
No adaptation remained decisive for long. A successful frequency spread, jammer, net, interceptor drone, cage, or navigation method prompted the other side to alter hardware and tactics within weeks.
Cheap Precision, Expensive Consequences
Drones did not remove the need for artillery, armour, aircraft, or infantry. They connected those forces, made them more vulnerable, and rewarded armies able to manufacture and learn fastest.
They also created new civilian danger. In September 2024, UN monitors found that UAV attacks caused half of verified civilian casualties in the Ukrainian-held part of Kherson region, where operators could often see the vehicles or people they targeted.
The drone war changed the relationship between surveillance, distance, precision, and price. It made sophisticated aerial attack widely available—but it did not make the decisions about whom to watch and strike any less human.
